Our Annual Toronto Film Festival Party featuring Acid Girls!

31 August 2010

Our Annual Toronto Film Festival Party featuring Acid Girls!

You might recognise the name Acid Girls because you downloaded free mp3s from their really awesome blog (back when free music was a new idea). You might know the name because you downloaded their recent bangers off someone else’s blog (not theirs, though, it’s since retired).

But this past year Acid Girls have began establishing themselves for productions that are aware of the slicker sides of house, techno and hip hop, without forgetting their banging responsibility to the party.

And judging by their recent live sets, these guys have honed and refined their powers to reach the next level of party sorcery. Toronto, you’re due for a visit, and we’re proud to be the ones to bring you the city’s first appearance of Acid Girls.

Gingy & Bordello - Vaporizer EP Now Available On Beatport

Gingy & Bordello - Vaporizer EP Now Available On Beatport

Not too long ago, More Proof’s resident technerd Gingy started “jamming out” with another young upstart producer called Bordello.  The value of their collabo was obvious - the resulting Vaporizer is their best production yet.

After a nice run of DJ support from the likes of Richie Hawtin, Simian Mobile Disco, Tim Green, Brodinski, Jokers of the Scene, and more, the ep is now available to everyone via the Beatport link below.  Go Gingy!

Vaporizer e.p. on Beatport

P.S. Big up to our old pal (and recent Boys Noize signee) Rynecologist for the remix.

Model 500 — The Flow (Juan Atkins G-Funk Mix)

From the Favorite Songs Ever department.
The year is 1995. Techno pioneer Juan Atkins takes his own Model 500 moniker to a G-Funk place, and makes the best trip-hop song ever.

OK, so that may be a bit of an exaggeration, but this is one of the smoothest tracks I know.

P.S. Exotic Newark!

As Day Turns To Night

A house classic that came to mind when Gabe launched the missile that is Roller Disco 3.  From such strong source material, it’s no wonder that 900 Degrees is such a stormer.  Is stormer an ok buzzword these days? Can you believe this track is ten years old now!

White Light Mix Volume 19: Your Boy Brian

White Light Mix Volume 19: Your Boy Brian

I knew that Your Boy Brian would do a great mix for Neoteric and Matty C’s White Light mix series, but this is nicely exceeding my expectations.  The dude brought his A game on this one.

Brian’s own description is almost as entertaining as the music:

“This mix was a pleasant departure from all the commercial gigs i’ve been taking on lately. It’s sorta paced like a movie / square rpg; little peaks and valleys, a few bittersweet melodies, a cathartic finish and then the credits roll. It’s also makes for decent listening while you’re doing crossword puzzles.”

Styrofoam Ones: OTTAP (Gingy Remix)

Styrofoam Ones are having a banner year, including a stream of solid remixes, but our favorite for some time has been this little doozy from our very own Gingy.  Here it is, for your enjoyment, courtesy of the band.

Gingy has been playing this at the More Proof parties for months now, with a great response, so you may recognize it.

Pilotpriest: Body Double out now

The latest release from our in-house phantom of the galaxy is the brooding, slow mo explosion Body Double, a track that became famous this week when a blog decided it was the new Daft Punk.  It’s not Daft Punk, no, But it is damn good, and few artists could stand up to the comparison.

Lucky for Pilotpriest, the release was just about ready. So here it is in all of its glory, he’s pulled it out of the stable and slapped its ass so it can run off into the world.

Brodinski Dropping A New Gingy Track

On Saturday Brodinski came through Toronto and showed the city a good time.  Listen to the vid on the left for a little preview of the Gingy and Bordello track “Vaporizer.”

(Probably a better audio experience than visual.  I can barely tell that the lens cap is off.)

Delancey Music Service First Episode

Eli Escobar and Stretch Armstrong have come together to create the Delancey Music Service, a weekly radio show on East Village Radio. First episode and it’s already a big ol slice of hot jams and timid banter straight from two of the best out.

EVR killed their podcasts, but Eli’s blogsplot should have your fix every week.

Smalltown DJs: White Light 11

Smalltown DJs: White Light 11

Smalltown DJs are underrepresented on these pages, but the west coast has their back. They have put together the 11th in Neoteric’s White Light mix series.

Their mix carries on the White Light tradition of DJ music that doesn’t quite fit into a sweaty club.  Which is just what I needed this afternoon.

CFCF: Monolith

This Saturday’s More Proof party will be our truest lineup ever, and upstairs for your enjoyment will be Scott Nachos and Montreal’s CFCF.

CF’s (can I call you that? No?) album Continent is coming in October and this little slice of epic piano architecture should give you a good idea of how much it’s going to rock. Come celebrate back to fool with us on Saturday.

Still Going: Spaghetti Circus

Still Going: Spaghetti Circus

Your local DJ might save sexy male vocals in the deeper part of the register for gay night, but all of humanity deserves a luscious ear bath of syrupy wailing from Still Going and vocalist Reggie Watts.

A few months ago my love for disco was in full bloom, and since then I have been reviving my love for guitar. Nestled lovingly between these two obsessions is Spaghetti Circus.

Morgan Geist: We Make It Good Mix

After becoming obsessed with Geist’s band Metro Area, I spent a lot of time listening to the Unclassics CD I ordered off the internet when I got my first credit card.

This could be considered the closest thing Geist has done since Unclassics, and perfect listening for a late-summer Sunday evening.

Jokers Of The Scene: Baggy Bottom Boys Video

It’s hard to imagine a better visual to accompany JOTS’ moody anthem Baggy Bottom Boys than Ayres’ original video, but they seem to have done it with the official video.  They’ve married their unrestrained live sets with their fondness for comprehensive gloom.

More Proof ally Julian Wadsworth aka Red Foxx shot a couple of their shows and let LA’s Demonbabies shape the footage into the artwork you see below.

Eli Escobar remixes Amanda Blank

The original beat behind Amanda Blank’s “Make It Take It” brought a smile to my face because it sounded a bit like the B-52s, but Eli Escobar’s remix made me say “a ha”.

If you want an idea of his actual reference points, you might enjoy that Eli twittered “the proper title” for the remix, which I have included below.

Jacques Renault for DFA Radio Mix: Summer 2009

Jacques Renault, one half of July More Proof guests Runaway, has put together DFA’s latest installment of their radio mix series.

This is an hour of slick disco treasures, all new to me, but with a rich, golden oldies sound. If it ever stops raining in Toronto this summer, maybe we’ll get a chance to enjoy these in the warm evening sun.

Julian Casablancas: Phrazes For The Young Trailer

The Strokes’ Julian Casablancas is quashing rumors that he’s been up to nothing much with this trailer for his upcoming solo album Phrazes For The Young

Presumably what Julian’s been up to is watching 80s fantasy movies, because from the visuals to the soundtrack (to his outfit) he has them down. No word yet on if this retro fantasy has anything in common with one of my previous retro fantasies: listening to the Strokes.

Metric: Collect Call (Tom Wrecks Remix)

Tom Wrecks is one of Toronto’s (Ottawa’s) best new remixing talents. I can’t wait to hear what the Stylusts are cooking up for their full length album, not because Tom’s been Kanye-approved, but because he has vision and big plans for his talent.

This Metric remix tugs at heart strings with sweet vocals and piano. Let us know how you like it on Saturday because he’s playing the Drake Underground and I will be choon selecting myself in the lounge.

DJ Travel Insurance: Mighty Bloody Real

It’s taken me a long time to respond to Gingy so I figured I’d respond with a particularly tasty nugget.

This edit of Sylvester struck me for its sound, percussion, those synth dips and oh those keys.

You probably won’t hear this one on Saturday when Benzi comes through, but it’s one of my favorite things to play lately, so if the disco flows…

I’ve never been a big Depeche Mode fan, but their influence can be heard on some of my favorite emotional techno.

After Thom Yorke’s Eraser album, it made sense that he would collab with Modeselektor for their album. Here’s what happens when two of my favorite working musicians today get together to make a track.

Tangerine Dream

In celebration of the new Phoenix album taking over my airwaves, I’m going to post a selection from their new Kitsune Tabloid mix CD.

This song was originally taken from Tangerine Dream’s soundtrack to Risky Business, which is a nice selection even if it’s more known for Tom Cruise dancing to and Bob Seger’s Old Time Rock And Roll.

Shawn Stussy is a counterculture legend, having launched Stussy from his Laguna Beach surfboard shop in 1980.  He sold the company in 1996, and he’s kept pretty quiet in the years since, but as he’s about to launch his new label S/Double, he’s entering the world of blogging.

Shawn has already started us off with some history, previews of the new line, and a preview of his new design studio that will make your jaw drop. Curious as to how it will progress from there.

Outrageous Claims Dept: DJ Semtex on Kanye and Mr. Hudson

25 February 2009

Outrageous Claims Dept: DJ Semtex on Kanye and Mr. Hudson

You may consider British radio presenter DJ Semtex a journalist, and this journalist just fired up some noteworthy hyperbole after witnessing a night-long studio sesh between Kanye West and Mr Hudson.

“Kanye West creating music with Mr Hudson in a North London studio is something that I never imagined happening, or witnessing. Several bangers were cooked up, and they will be served up this summer.

After 808s, it’s crazy to see Kanye spitting fire again, it’s like he’s been re-energized, he’s back on that College Dropout sh*t!”

Is this the ranting of a giddy, known-Kanye-fanboy, or is Semtex wearing his journalistic hat on this one? Is he shamelessly trying to bring attention to his rants by namedropping Kanye’s first album, or is there something about the new songs that hearkens to Ye’s early music? I await the Mr. Hudson album, so it remains to be seen.

Playlists: Interview Magazine

In the March issue of Interview, art star Damien Hirst interviews Lily Allen, whose feature is sophisticatedly photographed in retro black and white.  While checking it out, I came across this little goldmine of great playlists from some noteworthy people: the likes of Q-Tip, Sebastien Tellier and Sinead O’Connor.

At the moment, I’ve been enjoying Santogold’s playlist — reggae, dirty south, B-52s — and I’m moving on to Tip’s in a minute.

And if you’re inclined to pay attention to what really pretty girls are listening to, Daisy Lowe and Aggy Degn have also provided their own playlists. Afterall, as Interview is quick to point out in capitals letters, EVERYONE is a DJ.

Daniel Merriweather feat. Wale: Change

Daniel Merriweather is a blue-eyed, post-boy-band soul singer from Melbourne, Australia. He is best known for his frequent collaborations with producer Mark Ronson — especially their Smiths cover Stop Me — released for Ronson’s solo record in 2007.

Meanwhile, Merriweather’s debut solo album Love and War due is out this spring. You can get a preview with the video for his first single, Change.

More tracks available as per usual via Myspace, and are definitely worth a listen.

10 Deep Presents: The New Deal Mixed by DJ Benzi

The New Deal is my new favorite Benzi mixtape. I made up a new dance for the Diplo remix. It involves rasta hats, bamboo sticks and the running man but with stomping. And how much of a DJ Premier bite is that Ronson beat for Wale?

If you are stoked on the Kanye remix tape, there will be slick CD copies at More Proof on Friday, so come up and say what’s up in between Jager Bombs.

The Criterion Collection Online Cinematheque

30 November 2008

The Criterion Collection Online Cinematheque

The Criterion name has been a mark of film classics since they shot out a Citizen Kane laserdisc in the 1984. Last May, they made the move to Blu-Ray, and now they’re marking a new chapter with online rental for $5.

The selection is limited for now, but they promise much more to come, and they’ve started with a great selection of titles — I recommend Ratcatcher and Au Revoir Les Enfants. This morning I’m going to check out Lord of The Flies.

For a detailed explanation of the new site, check out this video on the Current, their blog, and while you’re there you can read essays, keep up with announcements and read blog posts from people like James L. Brooks, and Martin Scorsese.

The Fader: 808s and Heartbreak

Five years ago this month, a young upstart named Kanye West graced the cover of The Fader with a mission to change music. And with flashing lights forward, the mission still hasn’t changed — ‘Ye is as candid as ever with another Fader cover. This time 808s and Heartbreak is inspiring heated debate for its devotion to autotune, and Kanye is just enjoying the ride.

Kanye West - Paranoid (Seewhale Edit) MP3

If you’re still undecided on the album, Kanye’s behavior at the album’s listening parties is telling. Even though I don’t know whether I would give the album an A, his headspace gets an A+. He’s writing/producing/blogging for the love of it, and apparently soon he’ll be designing forward thinking streetwear.  Whether you love him or you hate him, he’s a force to be reckoned with. Go ‘Ye, go.

Lioness - You’re My Heart MP3 - The first song on the ep is their best known. Groove to this.
